Wizkid, Nigeria's sensational Afro pop artist is bringing his signature sounds to the Rebel Toronto!
Wizkid (birth name Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun) was born in Lagos (Nigeria) in 1990 and is a singer and songwriter. His musical style is best described as a blend of Afro pop (the music of the African diaspora, based on African musical traditions but also including American music and many Caribbean genres such as soca, calypso, and zouk), Afro beat (a genre - created by Nigerian multi instrumentalist and bandleader Fela Kuti, partially as an attempt to distinguish his music from the "soul music" of American artists such as James Brown - based on a combination of West African musical styles, such as highlife and yoruba, with American funk and jazz, with a focus on chanted vocals and percussion), reggae (while sometimes used in a broad sense to refer to most types of popular Jamaican dance music, the term reggae more properly denotes a particular music style that was strongly influenced by traditional mento as well as American jazz and rhythm and blues, and evolved out of the earlier genres ska and rocksteady), dancehall (an uptempo style of dance music derived from reggae, in which a DJ improvises lyrics over a recorded backing track or to the accompaniment of live musicians), and hip hop. He's had a stellar career with 3 studio albums.
